If your candle has started tunnelling, there's a simple way to restore even melting. All you need is aluminium foil!
What is candle tunnelling?
Tunnelling happens when wax only melts around the wick, leaving a hard ring along the walls. Over time the hollow gets deeper, and part of the wax goes unused.
Why does a candle tunnel?
The most common cause is too short a first burn. The problem can also be caused by a wick that's too short or drowned in wax, a draft, or putting the candle out before the melted wax reaches the edge of the vessel.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Prepare the candle: Extinguish it and make sure the wick is trimmed to about 0.5 cm.
- Wrap the candle: Wrap the top of the vessel in aluminium foil, leaving a small opening in the centre.
- Melt the wax: Light the candle and let it burn for about 1–2 hours. The foil will help melt the wax evenly across the whole surface.
- Remove the foil: Once the wax reaches the edges, carefully remove the foil and enjoy your refreshed candle!
Safety rules
The foil can get very hot. Don't touch it while the candle is burning, and never leave the candle unattended. It should stand on a stable surface, away from children, pets, and flammable materials. Don't use this method if the vessel is cracked or damaged.
How to prevent tunnelling from coming back?
On future burns, let the wax surface melt as evenly as possible. Trim the wick before lighting, and avoid placing the candle in a draft.
