Burning a soy candle correctly affects how evenly the wax melts, how long the candle keeps its scent, and whether you use its full contents. A few simple rules help you avoid tunnelling, sooting, and burning through the wick too quickly.
Kyuka Design candles are made from soy wax and placed in handmade ceramic or porcelain vessels. Once the candle burns down, the vessel can stay with you as a useful or decorative object. Before it gets its second life, though, it's worth taking proper care of the candle itself.
1. The first burn matters most
During the first burn, let the melted wax form as even a surface as possible and reach close to the vessel's edges. Depending on the candle's size, this can take about two to three hours.
Extinguishing the candle too soon can mean that on the next burn, wax starts melting only around the wick. This creates a hollow known as tunnelling, leaving wax unused along the walls.
2. Trim the wick before every burn
Before relighting, remove the charred part of the wooden wick and leave about 5 mm of length. You can do this with your fingers once the wick is completely cool, with scissors, or a special trimmer.
A wick that's too long can cause a tall, unstable flame, smoking, and faster wax consumption. One that's too short may struggle to light.

3. Don't burn the candle too briefly or too long
A single burn should last long enough for the wax to melt evenly — usually about two to three hours.
Don't leave the candle burning longer than the label recommends, though. Burning too long can overheat the vessel, enlarge the flame, and use up the scent and wax faster.
After putting it out, wait until the candle has fully cooled and the wax has hardened again.
4. Place the candle in the right spot
The candle should stand on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface. Don't place it:
- in a draft,
- near an open window,
- directly next to a radiator,
- in strong sunlight,
- near curtains, paper, or other flammable items.
Air movement can bend the flame and cause uneven burning or soot buildup on the vessel.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
5. Keep the wax surface clean
Before lighting, check the wax for wick trimmings, matches, dust, or other debris.
Small particles can affect how the candle burns and, in extreme cases, catch fire themselves. Remove them only once the wax is cool and hard.
6. How to extinguish a candle properly
It's best to use a candle snuffer, which cuts off the flame's air supply. You can also gently blow it out, taking care not to splash hot wax.
Don't use water to put out a candle. Hot wax can splatter violently, and the heated vessel could be damaged.
After extinguishing, check that the wick has stopped glowing. Don't touch or move the vessel until the wax has fully cooled.
7. What to do if your candle starts tunnelling
If hard wax remains along the walls and the candle only burns in the middle, that doesn't mean you need to throw it away.

8. Don't burn the candle all the way to the bottom
Stop using the candle before the flame reaches the very bottom of the vessel. Leave a thin layer of wax, following the instructions on the product.
This helps limit excessive heating of the base of the ceramic or porcelain container.
The second life of a ceramic vessel
Once the candle burns down, a handmade Kyuka Design vessel can stay with you for a long time. After safely removing any wax residue, use it as:
- a jewellery holder,
- a cover for a small plant,
- a container for small items,
- a decorative object,
- a small vase — if the shape of the vessel allows it.
