Handmade Ceramics – How Is It Different from Factory Production?

By Ewelina Pyda N.A Aug 06, 2026
Ręcznie robiona ceramika – czym różni się od produkcji fabrycznej?

The term "handmade ceramics" comes up very often these days. But it can describe completely different processes: from a single vessel shaped by hand, to a product made from a mould yet finished, glazed, and inspected by hand.

How is it at Kyuka?

We're a design studio and a small manufactory. We start by designing the object, preparing a prototype and a mould, then produce short runs in our workshop in Milanówek.

The mould lets us preserve the design's characteristic shape. Handwork means each piece goes through many individual stages and is never an anonymous copy.

Everything starts with the design

Before a finished mug, candle, or cup appears, we work on proportions, the handle, wall thickness, and how it will be used.

A good mug can't just be attractive in a photo. It has to sit comfortably in the hand, have a properly shaped rim, and stay stable once filled.

It's similar with a candle. The shape should look good before lighting, during burning, and after the wax is used up.

Sketches and prototypes are made at this stage. Not all of them make it into production. Sometimes a small change to the angle of a handle or the height of a vessel completely changes how the object is used.

A short run doesn't mean identical mass production

Using a mould lets us reproduce the designed shape, but the rest of the work is still done by hand.

Each piece has to be taken out of the mould, cleaned, smoothed, dried, and then prepared for firing. Depending on the collection, the object is glazed, left in the material's natural surface, or hand-painted.

In the DaDa collection, we apply black strokes by hand onto light porcelain. The line pattern isn't printed and doesn't repeat mechanically. That's why two mugs belong to the same collection, yet each has its own drawing.

Where do differences between pieces come from?

Ceramics changes during drying and firing. The material shrinks, the glaze reacts to temperature, and hand decoration sits slightly differently on each surface.

That's why small differences can appear in:

  • shade,
  • glaze pooling,
  • surface texture,
  • the hand-painted pattern,
  • dimensions,
  • how the porcelain lets light through.

Not every irregularity, though, is a feature of craftsmanship. Every product should be stable, functional, and safe to use. Pieces that don't meet our quality standards don't go on regular sale.

Handmade production doesn't mean a lack of control. It means control carried out by a person at each stage of the work.

Why does making a short run take time?

In ceramics, you can't rush everything.

A vessel has to dry calmly. Drying it too fast can lead to warping or cracking. Firing also needs the right amount of time, as does cooling the kiln. Trying to open it too early can ruin the results of many previous hours of work.

On top of that comes finishing, glazing, quality control, and — for candles — preparing the wax, scent, and wick.

So when we tell you a product will be ready by a certain date, that's not warehouse dispatch time — it's the time it actually takes for the object to be made.

Craft and design don't have to be mutually exclusive

Craft is sometimes associated with improvisation, and design with industrial repeatability. We look for the space between these two worlds.

We want to create objects that are consciously designed, functional, and recognisable, yet made locally, in short runs, and keeping the traces of human hands.

That way, a mug can be a comfortable everyday object and, at the same time, a small work of art.

How to recognise genuinely handmade ceramics?

Before buying, it's worth checking:

  • whether the brand shows its own workshop and production process,
  • where the objects are made,
  • who designs them,
  • whether it describes the materials used,
  • whether it discloses possible differences between pieces,
  • whether it shows details and surfaces, not just renders.

Transparency remains the most important thing. Customers should know whether they're buying an industrial product, a hand-decorated semi-finished item, or an object made from start to finish in a specific workshop.

At Kyuka, design, prototyping, and production come together in one place. That lets us control not just how the product looks, but also how it feels to hold, use, and store.
